There was a charismatic awakening taking place in the Faroe Islands in the 1970s and 1980s.
When the services held in the tent on Gøtueiði drew to a close, a few famlies decided to buy a house in the village of Skálafirði, and it became the place for the charismatic movement, which had emerged in Eysturoy. Keldan started as a local church in 1987.
Some of the leaders from this awakening formed a board of elders, and started to organise regular services.
The way the services are held has changed over time. In the beginning the elders took turns to organise the services and the Holy Spirit did a great work. It soon became clear that there was a need of a pastor in Keldan. The members of the church were asked to pray that the Lord would call people to lead the ministry. Some were asked and encouraged to take on the assignment of leading the church, but it took some time until leaders was appointed.
In 1997 Pauli and Jastrid Høj were ordained as pastors of Keldan.
After the ordination of Pauli and Jastrid as pastors the structure of the church changed.
In the course of time the church has grown substantially and the unity and sense of togetherness has become stronger. Keldan is a local church with its own vision and has varied ministries that includes all age groups.
The vision that Keldan is to be a spiritual centre in the Faroe Islands is not new. This vision started to take shape when the work on the new building for the church started in the late 1990’s.
In 2004 the new premise was taken into use. The sanctuary has the capacity to seat around 750 people, and the cafeteria has 250 seats. Together with the rest of the facilities in our church we are able to arrange and host bigger conferences and concerts. The children church has the capacity to seat 130-150 children for children services.
In 2010 we started our Christian school. We have children in the age between prepatory school to 7th grade. 90-100 children yearly attend the school. In addition to this we also have after-school program as a part of the school.
In 2017 Búgvi Olsen was ordained as a pastor in Keldan church.
In 2021 we started a Bible School (BSK). It is an evening and weekend Bibleschool and from fall 2026 it will be a day time Bible school approximately 9 months a year.
Keldan is an independent charismatic evangelical church and is not formally part of any particular denomination. We have an open and interdenominational mindset and cooperate with other congregations and churches to further the work of God on earth. We believe in the gospel about salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, which has been the foundation for all Christians at all times.
